Charleston's new fire chief enjoys popularity and respect in Maryland department

The Post and Courier
Saturday, October 11, 2008

When Thomas Carr Jr. takes command of the Charleston Fire Department next month, he will bring to the job 30 years of experience advocating for firefighter health and safety and a track record of forming alliances.

As chief of the Montgomery County (Md.) Fire and Rescue Service, Carr notched a string of successes that made him popular among county leaders, fire commanders and the rank-and-file that are the lifeblood of its firehouses.

Many challenges await Carr in Charleston, where the department is still reeling from the deaths of nine of its firefighters in last year's Sofa Super Store blaze and undergoing a sweeping overhaul of equipment and tactics that contributed to the tragedy.

But folks around Montgomery County, where Carr has spent his entire career, say there's no better man for the job.

Read more about Carr's tenure in Maryland and what his firefighters say about him in a profile of the new chief in Sunday's editions of The Post and Courier.
