'Iron Chef' The Culinary Institute of Charleston (Palmer Campus) is the location of Taste of Charleston's "Iron Chef" competition on Friday. The Palmer Campus has just undergone a $10 million renovation and the competition should showcase the facility. Tickets are $10 in advance and may be purchased by calling 452-6088. Spot singing Robert Dickson of the popular Robert's Restaurant of Charleston will not be hitting any High C's for a while, recovering from knee surgery. Lighting up Charleston's great white way will be Robert Ivey, performing popular show tunes, George Gershwin and Cole Porter. Ivey is on the menu Wednesday-Friday; while Saturday nights William Schlitt and daughter, Johanna Schlitt will perform. The restaurant is at 182 East Bay Street. Pig in a poke Construction has begun for the Jim 'N Nick's barbecue restaurant in North Charleston, near the Tanger Outlet location. No date has been set for the completion or opening date. Aqua-licious The Aqua Terrace, at the Marriott Charleston, has launched a new menu along with its fresh fruit cocktails and live music venue. Check out their aerie at 170 Lockwood Blvd., 723-3000. Squealer squelched Moneyhun's Oink, a barbecue joint on Clements Ferry Road has closed. It certainly was not due to the 'cue, fresh onion slaw and the largesse of its menu, not to mention good food. Go figure. Now open Matt Bolus has opened Red Sky on Seabrook Island. The former sous chef at The Ocean Room at the Sanctuary on Kiawah has branched out on his own and renovated the previous Red Sky Grill. The restaurant serves dinner 5:30-10 p.m. seven days a week at 1001 Landfall Way. For more information, call 768-0183. Cookbook soiree The local Les Dames d'Escoffier of Charleston has launched the organization's first cookbook titled "Cooking With Les Dames D'Escoffier: At Home with the Women Who Shape the Way We Eat and Drink." The Art Institute of Charleston will host the first celebration of the cookbook at 6 p.m. Oct. 17. The book will be available for purchase and samples will be served. There is a nominal fee to attend. Contributors to the book include Julia Child, Alice Waters, Gale Gand, and our own Nathalie Dupree. Trading tastes Nov. 6-8, Trident Technical College is offering a workshop that explores the history and cultural exchanges of the spice routes. The featured speaker will be Naomi Duguid author of "Beyond The Great Wall: Recipes and Travel In The Other China," "Hot Sour Salty Sweet" and "Mangoes and Curry Leaves" along with other scholars and historians. A new captain The Atlantic Room, the signature seafood restaurant at Kiawah, has hired William Morrison as chef de cuisine. Morrison comes to the resort from the kitchen of L'Escalier at The Breakers in Palm Beach, Fla. The Atlantic Room is in The Ocean Course Clubhouse. Now closed Mama Fu's, 1812 Sam Rittenberg Blvd., West Ashley, has shut its doors. A facelift In this dog eat dog world, Poogan's Porch, 72 Queen St., was due. Check out its redecorated space from head (new tin ceiling) to toe (refinished floors). This old hound is sporting a new look on both its interior and lunch menu. Ten clams Because Fish "wants to fill you up and not clean you out," they have launched a new lunch promotion. Selections from its new menu will be priced at $10 for a lunch entree, fountain drink and tax. Fish is at 442 King St. and can be reached at 722-3474.
