Deer shot too many times, motorist says
Numerous rounds fired at animal injured by car
The Post and Courier
Wednesday, March 12, 2008
The deer hit by a car writhed in pain and needed to be put out of its misery. But were a dozen or so shots really necessary? That's what Audra Luke found herself wondering Tuesday after witnessing a scene on Dorchester Road near Michaux Parkway. The 36-year-old administrative assistant had been on her way to buy supplies from a veterinarian around 1:30 p.m. and was one of the first people to arrive after the accident. "It was a bit excessive," Luke said. "It was no less than 12, I can guarantee you that. She emptied her clip and reloaded." Luke said none of the shots were to the head. She filed a complaint later that afternoon and North Charleston police confirmed they were looking into her concerns. In a release, the department's public information officer, Spencer Pryor, provided this account: "The on-scene officer observed the lethargic deer in grave condition and thrashing about. Based on the condition of the animal, the decision was made to put the animal to sleep. The officer fired multiple rounds from her service revolver, ending the life of the deer." The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety estimates more than 1.5 million deer-vehicle collisions occur each year, killing 150 people, causing thousands of injuries and damaging vehicles to the tune of more than $1 billion. Insurance claims show South Carolina has been one of the top 10 states for such accidents, according to the Insurance Information Institute. Car-versus-deer crashes tend to be more common during deer mating and migration season in the fall. But with habitat giving way to new development, it's a year-round problem around Charleston, said Janet Kinser, founder and director of Keeper of the Wild, a center that helps rehabilitate mammals indigenous to South Carolina. There are no state laws requiring motorists to call authorities about wounded animals, said Anna Martin, a Department of Natural Resources media coordinator. In rural areas, residents can shoot animals wounded after a crash, she said. In addition to local law enforcement, motorists can reach DNR's nuisance wildlife program or its law enforcement officers to deal with these situations.

What does it matter how many times the deer was shot. Once its dead its not feeling anything. How about next time just let it lay there and suffer till it finally dies a slow and painful death. What would you have had them do lady? Get a life.

Who cares? Jeez...there sure are some stupid priorities people have out there. It was a freakin' deer, not someone's family dog. Lord knows she'd have complained if they didn't do anything.

The fact is the deer was put out of its misery. It seems that this lady needs to get a life if this is all she has to complain about.

I never have understood the thrill/sport some get from shooting an animal that is so dumb it will literally walk in front of a speeding car! It must take great skill to kill one?

crankyyankee- Please take your behind back up north. It is a great sport and takes skill to hunt deer. If you don't like it down here you are free to leave. I'm sure no one will miss you. Let me guess you must be a member of PETA, right? So am I People Eating Tasty Animals.

What a poorly written story. I do not see anywhere in the story where anyone deliberately tried to prolong any misery of the animal. EVERYONE tried to do the right thing. Sometimes we do not get it right the first time, but, with perseverance, we may eventually get it right. Unfortunately, Ms. Luke's intelligence does not seem to match her great compassion.

Yankee…
The thrill is the hunt, something us Neanderthals haven’t been able to shake since being civilized by utopian man. The Pink Shirts Storm troopers of the Nanny state would love to declare open season on hunters but that’s another story. As to this urge to hunt, I’m not sure if hunting is learned or if it’s part of our genetic makeup after million of years of hunting and gathering, whatever the reason I enjoy hunting. I’m sure someday (the Pink Shirts) will have a special mental institution or re-education camp to cure us of this urge but until that day comes I look forward to hunting season.

"It was a bit excessive," Luke said. "It was no less than 12, I can guarantee you that. She emptied her clip and reloaded."
You don't know who "she" is until two paragraphs later.
I also find it hard to believe that a police officer who has to have very good reason to fire their gun would empty their clip into a dying animal, then reload.
Did this lady stand there and count? This story is just not right.

I'm not a hunter, but I'm an avid fisherman. Same type of thing if you think about it. Nothing wrong with either.
As far as walking out in front of cars... people do it all of the time too. Cars, trucks, trains...
I'm not sure why this story brought up debates about hunting or northerners moving south. Neither has anything to do with the story.
The bottom line is that there is a deer jerky opportunity here and we should ALL be rejoicing! :)
Thank You, Officer, for putting the inured animal out of its misery.

Welcome, yankees. Since 9-11, I've loved all of my law abiding fellow American brothers and sisters. But, just because you yanks think that you won the war, does not mean that we have to believe and act on any other fairy tale or trick that you tell us.

I'm not anti hunting. I just don't see any skill/thrill involved in killing an animal that is so dumb as to commit autocide! Why don't you just drive up and down the road and run them over as they cross the road? Of coarse you couldn't wear the clothes with the little leaves all over them and the john deer hat if you did that!

I was born in Atlanta. My dad spent 21 years in the Navy and then I spent 20 years in the Navy. I've lived and traveled all over the US. I spent 13 years of my naval career here in Charleston and loved it! I ended my naval career in the Low Country because this is where I wanted to stay. I consider myself a southerner.
Having said all of that, I get really tired of the Yankee/Southerner battle of words and wits. Every place I've ever lived has had it's good points and it's bad points, good people and bad people. I like the south mainly because of the weather and, I'll admit, the conservatism. I make fun of Californians for being tree hugging liberal democrats, but it's just in jest. I live in San Diego, San Francisco and Alameda and had a great time in all three places.
Continuing to fight the Civil War and arguing about who is better, smarter or kinder just doesn't make sense to me. The people that get caught up in that argument usually do nothing but make themselves look silly.
One fact I will give to the south... we have better looking women down here :) (Again, joking... sort of :))
Now, back to the article… if the person that will be processing this deer is reading… I’d sure like some jerky :)

Hunting is just one of those pursuits like in our constitution “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” that people do. I realize it’s not for everyone and some people may not understand this thing called “hunting” anymore than I understand why people chase a small ball around a golf course. Playing golf, surfing, fishing, mountain climbing etc. are all pursuits that people enjoy. I realize they're people out there that can not stand to see people enjoying themselves. I have no idea what to say about those people except get a life!
P.S. I’m not from the South but I do like it here.

A deer is a very tuff animal it was hit by a car that weighs at least 3000 pounds doing at least 45 and it was still alive. Unless you shoot it in the head our the heart you could shoot it a dozen times before it dies

big props to coldbeer for telling it straight! You're on a roll lately dude. I couldn't agree more with your earlier post about yankee/southerner bickering. From the article: "In a release, the department's public information officer, Spencer Pryor, provided this account: "The on-scene officer observed the lethargic deer in grave condition and thrashing about. Based on the condition of the animal, the decision was made to put the animal to sleep. The officer fired multiple rounds from her service revolver, ending the life of the deer.""
Let's see: 'put the animal to sleep': normally refers to a veterinarian euthanizing an animal with a IV injection. 'kill the deer' would have been much better. Try again, Spencer.:)
If the deer was lethargic, one shot should have done the job. Lethargy is defined as a state of sluggishness, inactivity and apathy. Get a dictionary, Spence.
To concerned motorist: I'd be more concerned that a police officer had to fire her weapon 12 times to kill a deer that was probably no more than 10-15 feet away. However, the officer did what she had to do, given the circumstances. The only way I think a complaint would be justified would be if she had fired a dozen shots into the deer while a bus full of elementary school children were watching.
Most of us love animals and many hunters love their hunting dog more than their wife. But it would be inhumane if the officer had not killed the deer.
Happy hunting everyone! :)

Y'all are not going to believe this. I tried to post a comment about an ex-Summerville police officer who had to shoot a small, furry masked mammal that was foaming at the mouth. (Point being, it took seven shots.) Well, I used the abbreviation for the masked animal and got an automated message from the P&C to, quote, "Watch your mouth! We don't use the c--n word here."
This is my fourth attempt to post. Apparently I can't even say the entire word for the small, furry masked animal.
As a retired journalist, I am beyond stunned.

Thankfully no stray bullets caught someone off guard..12 shots is excessive....I can understand why someone would stop for a car vs. deer accident because I had a friend die in an accident that way. Maybe the deer flopping around scared the officer, or maybe she was using it as target practice.

Truthfully, if the deer had to be shot 12 times, I would say that it had gotten hold of some of that drug laced water. The question would be what drug or combination of drugs?
granny, apology accepted. I knew you weren't really a mean person.
As far as the North/South thing; it is over and done. My favorite uncle was from Chicago. I have cousins in Maine, Michigan, and Illinois.

It's more than just the countless needless lives. It's the fundamental structure and sharing of power established by this nation's founding fathers that was lost. I wonder if things would have been different if cooler heads had prevailed for just a little longer. Slavery would have ended on its own. Not only was the industrial revolution and other technological advances about to stamp it out, but Europe was threatening to cut off trade over it. The continuance of trade with the CSA by Great Britain was just a way to slap Washington in the face since GB was still smarting from embarrassments in 1785 and 1812. If shots hadn't been fired, perhaps the 10th amendment would still exist (in more than just name) and the rise of bloated federalism could have been avoided. With slavery eliminated, those wanting to trample the south would have had to finally be honest about their true intentions -- and it would have been a much harder sell.

I think all of you are still missing the point. Any person skilled to tote a gun should rightly know how to take an animal (human or otherwise) out of their misery. A slow painful death (and getting hit with 12 times) certainly doesn't fit the situation at hand. I think the officer needs to specifically spend some time at the shooting range... and God rest that poor deer's soul for having to endure something like this.
Ps. I was in the area post trauma- for what it's worth.

There is no formal training at the SC CJA for putting animals out of their misery.
Due to budgetary constraints, ammunition issued is the lowest bid and normal qualifying requirements are fairly slack as well, when compared to another areas Law Enforcement, out of this state.
Compared to some Cops I've seen on the Range, be grateful she was at least on-target.
I guess she wasn't issued a shotgun... a lack of proper Law Enforcement Equipment, North Chas.?

Hunting is the sport of cowards, chasing harmless animals through the woods so that you can have the pleasure of killing a living being that is just trying to survive. All of the blockheads out there who get a thrill out of killing, or gutting a living fish and watching it writhe in a death agony are sick bastards plain and simple. Stupidity crosses the Mason Dixon line, so never mind the North and South thing. If you had watched the police officer pump all of those shots into the poor deer you would have probably gotten the thrill of your life, since you enjoy blood lust. Probably works better for you than Viagra. If a mortally injured animal must be dispatched, it should be with one lethal shot, unless the officer was just practicing and liked to see an animal suffer. Unless you all grow a higher level of consciousness, society is lost. And don't tell me to go back to where I came from - all you animal abusers should crawl back under your rocks and stay there for the good of us all.

It's pointless to even discuss this kind of cruelty with boneheads. The big question is why thinking about preventing cruelty to animals makes you all so pissed off. Are you afraid that someone will take your steaks away, or is it that you won't have anything lesser than yourself to push around or mistreat? Feeling a little powerless, or just brain-dead?

YankeeLady;
The deer was injured beyond relief as the result of an accident. The proper action is to put the creature out of its' misery.
As for the rest of you "experts", proper firing technique is not necessarily the solution. Knowing where to aim and having a clear shot is much more important.
The story as it appears offers nowhere near enough info to make a judgement as to the results of any action the officer took. In fact, the officers' version of the story is not even offered, nor does it appear that there was any effort made to find any witness who might have offered information supporting the officers actions.
1:30 PM, What's a deer doing crossing a road at midday? That is highly unusual!
