Golf Classic raises $160,000 for MUSC

The second annual Abby's Friends Charity Golf Classic and Gala was held June 27 at the Daniel Island Club, raising more than $160,000 for MUSC Children's Hospital, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and Camp Adam Fisher.

Abby's Friends is a nonprofit organization created by Lowcountry residents John and Kendell Sutterlin, whose 6-year-old daughter, Abigail, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

The charity event was intended to build awareness and support from family, friends and the community. It was selected as a Lexus Champions for Charity event in 2007 and 2008.

Abby's Friends donated the $170,000 raised at the 2007 event to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and Camp Adam Fisher (a camp for diabetic children).

Type I diabetes is very different from Type II diabetes. Type I diabetics are insulin dependent, while Type II mostly affects the adult population and in most cases can be controlled with diet and exercise or oral medication.

Next year's event is planned for June 26, 2009, at the Daniel Island Club.
