Diving accident kills Mount Pleasant man

TONY BARTELME
The Post and Courier
Sunday, July 6, 2008

An avid scuba diver from Mount Pleasant died Friday while spearfishing off Charleston, officials said Saturday.

An autopsy performed Saturday found that Tim Edwards, 45, likely died of an air or gas embolism, a condition that can happen when divers rise too quickly, Charleston County Deputy Coroner Bobbi Jo O'Neal said. Edwards was an electrician.

Edwards and eight others aboard the 36-foot Rockville-based Muntu Too were about 30 miles off the coast Friday, the Coast Guard reported.

Edwards was spearfishing with a friend when they got separated, Coast Guard Petty Officer Mark Henricksen said. "The next time they saw him was on the surface."

A Coast Guard helicopter based in Charleston raced to the scene and airlifted Edwards to the Medical University of South Carolina.

He was pronounced dead later Friday morning, O'Neal said.

Investigators weren't sure how Edwards ran into trouble and were hoping a diving computer might offer some clues, Henricksen said.

The boat was a recreational dive boat registered to Anthony Black, said Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Eric King. King said diving fatalities are rare off the South Carolina coast compared to other areas of the Southeast.

It is sad to lose one to an unexpected accident. The only solace we can take is that he died doing something he loved so much. You will be missed greatly by the ones you fished and dived with.

Just another case of folks riding around after dark who just don't know what they are doing. To travel that far into the marsh, with injuries, sounds like they were going pretty fast. At moderate speed, the drag of hull and motor foot would have slowed/stopped the boat much sooner, with no injuries, other than to the driver's pride.

Yeah before you start talking about my Daddy on the internet get your stories straight. He was experienced and it was an accident. So keep your rude comments to yourself and have a heart. Thank you-
Christy Edwards

Years ago we lost a neighbor in a similar fashion. He was a commercial diver, and came home and went to bed with a severe headache. His wife couldn't wake him the next morning.
My prayers and condolences go out to Mr. Edwards' family and friends. May you remember the good times and find peace in them.

Sorry for upsetting some folks. Shortly after I posted the missdirected comment, I tried to post an apology and explanation, but it got lost in cyber space. No offense was intended - sorry for your loss.

Who can understand the ways of God; when He is ready
for you it does not matter where you are or what you
are doing, He calls you home. Grief is itself like a
medicine. Because Christ Lives, death is not tragedy
but triumph, we sorrow for a little while but JOY
COMES IN THE Morning

As a diver myself I am very saddened for your families loss.
At times on these blogs people make mistakes like above.
I am positive it was a mistake.

May your father rest in peace and I hope the best for you and your family.
God Bless.
