2 men charged at boat landing

Two Hollywood men hanging around Limehouse Boat Landing on Johns Island were taken into custody after locals complained about their suspicious behavior.

According to a Charleston County Sheriff's report, two Johns Island men and a woman from Charleston were fishing on the dock around midnight Aug. 15 when they saw two men walking and driving around the landing. They said one was walking up to vehicles and crouching behind them, and when he walked up to the woman's car, she told him her child was in there, even though she does not have a child. The man said he was looking for a place to urinate.

One of the men said he saw the second Hollywood man driving around the boat landing and stopping at certain locations. However, because the three witnesses were on the dock, they did not get a clear view of what he was doing. When a deputy arrived on the scene, he found the first Hollywood man on his hands and knees, trying to hide.

After the two men were cuffed, the deputy ran their information and found that one was wanted in Georgia on forgery charges. The deputy found open gas caps on several vehicles parked at the landing, a gas can and a siphoning tube with fresh gas dripping from it.

The deputy also found a fresh cut in a convertible car top where the first man tried to gain entry. The man said he was at the boat landing only to urinate, and the other Hollywood man said he picked the first one up down the street and was only giving him a ride. He also said he was asleep while his passenger did his thing.

Both were charged with tampering with automobiles and petit larceny, and the first Hollywood man also was charged with malicious injury to private property.

Stray bullet goes through home

A stray bullet was shot through a home of a Johns Island man Aug. 15, according to a report from the Charleston County Sheriff's Office.

The bullet pierced the wall of the River Road residence, passed through a door, pierced a second wall, crossed a room, struck another wall and settled on a dresser drawer, according to the man who lives there. He said he did not know where the bullet came from.

It is noted on the report that the house is raised, and the wall that was penetrated is roughly 30 feet above ground level. There is a swamp behind the residence.

Man found taking nap in driveway

An intoxicated 22-year-old from Seneca decided a woman's lower King Street residence was just the place to take a nap around 5 a.m. Aug. 18, according to a Charleston police report.

The woman told the Charleston police officer who responded to her call that she noticed her dog barking more than usual about 4:30 a.m., a report states. Nearly 50 minutes later, she came outside and found the man passed out in her driveway. She woke him and found a disoriented man, unsteady on his feet and smelling strongly of alcohol, the report said. He did not know where he was or where he was staying for the night. The officer charged him with public drunkenness.

Boys charged with stealing stalks

Two 14-year-olds were charged Aug. 18 with stealing palm stalks on the peninsula, according to a Charleston police report.

On a routine bike patrol, two officers noticed two boys cutting stalks from a palmetto tree on city of Charleston property at Washington and Concord streets. The boys each had palm stalks in their hands and were searched. According to the report, one of them had a 1-inch pocket knife in his pocket, used to cut the stalks.

The juveniles were charged with injuring and destroying trees. Both were released to their mothers.

Man charged with possession

A man apprehended on city of Charleston housing property was charged with possessing drugs after he gave the officer the green light to search him.

According to a Charleston police report, an officer was on patrol around Johnson and Nassau streets when he saw the 45-year-old man running through the downtown property in sandals. Because of the time of day, the fact the property is considered a high-crime area and the man's footwear, the officer became suspicious.

The officer found the man in a corner on Johnson Street and determined he didn't live on city housing property. The man said, "You can go ahead and search me if you want." The officer found a white, rocklike substance that field-tested presumptive for cocaine base. The man was charged with possession of cocaine base.

These items are taken from selected incident reports from the Charleston Police Department and Charleston County Sheriff's Office.
