Trial date set for one SC trooper

The Post and Courier
Wednesday, August 27, 2008

A trial date was set Wednesday in the case of a state trooper who is seen on video hitting a fleeing suspect with his cruiser and later saying that he tried to hit the man. An attorney for Lance Cpl. Steve C. Garren of Greenwood said the incident was an unavoidable accident.

Few other details emerged when the two sides met in a federal court here before Chief U.S. District Judge David Norton to discuss the existence of evidence.

The trial is set to start Sept. 30 in Greenville.

In a 2007 dashboard video from Garren's patrol car released earlier this year, Garren drives after a running man, striking the man when he crosses in front of the cruiser. The man flips over the hood and into grass on the side of the road.

He has been suspended by the Department of Public Safety without pay, a decision he is also contesting.

I was under the impression a police officer had the right to use physical force to subdue a fleeing felony. Having seen the video it didn't appear to be excessive force. It was slow enough to throw him over the hood. Did he break a limb, cause a concussion or cause death?
Yes, he used his car to stop the individual. The car is another tool in the officer's personal arsenal.

This is not like the other video of a car chase when the trooper got out and kicked the suspect AFTER he was prone on the ground.

What a complete disgrace to South Carolina that this good man is on trial. I hope he is acquitted, then sues the state for millions of dollars for ruining his reputation.

Is this the video where it can be heard on the video that the cop that hit him said he intended to hit him?
