ACLU calls for prison review

The Post and Courier
Tuesday, August 26, 2008

COLUMBIA — The American Civil Liberties Union's South Carolina Office issued a call Tuesday for an independent examination of the state's prison system because of a number of charges that include "lax security, inmate abuse and a politicized, hostile work environment."

Graham Boyd, interim executive director of the state ACLU office, asked state leaders to request the National Institute of Corrections to audit the state Department of Corrections.

"With the population exploding and the corrections budget ever smaller, prison conditions within the state's Department of Corrections have deteriorated dramatically in recent years," Boyd said in a statement.

"There has been no accountability to the taxpayers who fund the system, the employees who work in the prisons or the individuals who are incarcerated in them.

"Given the current political environment surrounding this issue, it is clear that an independent agency is needed to properly assess and identify the problems that exist and to begin to create a plan to ensure that those problems are attended to without delay."

Gov. Mark Sanford's press secretary Joel Sawyer said the governor would welcome a review of his Cabinet agency. Sanford is concerned by the Legislature's lack of funding for the prisons.

Well Mr.& Mrs. Taxpayer, this is just the tip of the iceberg. South Carolina is going to be a kinder and gentler place to commit a crime. I can see how the ACLU can relate to the plight of the criminal. The ACLU like it’s criminal counter part do not respect YOUR property rights. The criminal has this sense of entitlement and he has no qualms of stealing something that belongs to you. It’s this have vs. have not theory. You have something and he doesn’t so he going to take it away from you.

Another thing the criminal doesn’t like is an armed citizenry. It makes it somewhat difficult to take something that belongs to you if you possess a firearm. The ACLU and it’s liberal allies can easily relate to that. They have this same problem with the second amendment.

A major accomplishment the ACLU lawyers and its liberal allies did back in the 1970s was to do away with the draft. This left 2 generations of young men not being expose to military culture and the use of firearms. We now have a lot more girlie men than we did 40 years ago. So it’s only a matter of time before the criminals will stop stealing because the state will do it for them.

In your more liberal and progressive states the ACLU lawyers are working overtime to pass legislation to allow convicted felons to vote in elections. It’s only natural for lawyers who don’t believe in property rights to look out for the rights of criminals. Birds of a feather flock together. We also got that November election coming up and Obama needs all the votes he can get. Socialists and criminals need to stay united.
