Banning baggy pants wins another ally

The Post and Courier
Friday, August 15, 2008

COLUMBIA — State Sen. Robert Ford is going to lend his support to a trio of Charleston City Councilmen who want to stop people from wearing their pants too low, and Ford pledges to take up a ban across South Carolina.

Ford, D-Charleston, said the look is destructive because it helps perpetuate the culture of drugs and gangs and violence.

"In this country we do have indecent exposure laws and this is a form of indecent exposure," Ford said.

The effort follows a mostly Southern trend that has ultimately been defeated or languished in others places such as Atlanta that have taken on the issue.

The three Charleston councilmen — James Lewis, Robert Mitchell and Wendell Gilliard— began receiving complaints from the people they represent and decided to take action.

Council meets Tuesday.

Ford, who is up for re-election, hopes to introduce a bill to address the issue, which he has done in the past, when the Legislature reconvenes in January.

Ok I understand what some of you are saying.But...we DO have indecent exposure laws.I agree the law can't mandate the fit of ones pants, thats just stupid. But we can say they we dont have to be forced to see someones underwear.I have posted this before but I don't want my kids subjected to some damn man standing around in his underwear. If it were a middle aged or older white man in a parking lot showing his underwear,he'd be arrested and dubbed a pervert. But if he's a teen/twenty something yr old man he's just trendy???And to answer the question of enforcement-the police would.Just as any other indecent exposure case.Don't get me wrong the police wouldnt stage panty raids or anything.lol But it could be addressed like loitering. Its a shame in society today people dont have the good sense on their own not to show their drawers.
