HILTON HEAD ISLAND - An environmental report says the lengthening of the Hilton Head Island Airport runway will have no environmental impact.
But some island residents find that hard to believe.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports (http://bit.ly/1ibbETQ) more than 120 residents gathered Monday for a meeting on an environmental impact statement. The study found the project will have no impact on air quality, wildlife or noise.
The project has stirred controversy recent years with residents concerned about everything from additional noise and removing trees to lower property values and effects on the Mitchelville community - a freedman's village founded during the Civil War.
A plan by Beaufort County and Hilton Head Island calls for extending the 4,300-foot runway to 5,400 feet. The study reviewed the first phase, an initial 700-foot extension.
