A fire believed to be related to a nearby lightning strike destroyed the laundry and maintenance building at Hampton Point Apartments in West Ashley, the Charleston Fire Department reported Sunday.
No one was injured.
Firefighters responded to a call reporting the fire at about 7 a.m. Sunday. Smoke and flames were visible at the 1,200-square-foot building, which is detached from the apartment buildings.
Firefighters initially made an interior fire attack but were withdrawn from the structure within the first few minutes due to structural concerns as well as small explosions thought to be related to items stored in the maintenance shop.
Early Sunday evening, units were still on the scene but the fire was considered under control. The investigation of the fire is ongoing.
