Hawkins to replace Tarleton as Post and Courier publisher

Executive Editor William E. N. Hawkins will replace Larry Tarleton as publisher of The Post and Courier upon Tarleton's retirement March 31.

Mack Matwali walked up to the door of the Boathouse restaurant on East Bay Street on Monday, newspaper under arm and ready to eat lunch. The Roanoke, Va., businessman in town on port-related business had no way of knowing the popular seafood establishment opened only during the evenings.

Bosch to cut 200 workers

Seventy-five employees signed up for a voluntary buyout at the Robert Bosch Corp. plant in North Charleston over the past few weeks, but that wasn't nearly enough to offset the slowing demand for the automotive parts the factory churns out.

Backups key VMI win over Bucs

With their top two players sitting on the bench in sweats, the VMI Keydets proved that their success this season is due more to the system they run, rather than the players who run it. Sophomore Hunter Houston, playing in his first game of the season, scored 18 points — including five 3-pointers — and sophomore guard Austin Kenon scored 26 points to lift the Big South Conference-leading Keydets to a 93-90 win over Charleston Southern at CSU Fieldhouse on Monday night.

Teen 'sexting' risky behavior

Across the Lowcountry, kids are returning to school this week, and many have powerful new weapons in their pockets, purses and book bags that they received over the holidays: cell phones with built-in cameras and text-messaging capabilities. About 80 percent of teens and nearly half of all kids ages 8 to 12 have a cell phone, according to a recent Nielsen report. That number soars to 93 percent for the 18- to 24-year-old age group.
